Events, Workshops and Projects in the Community

Arts Express runs an extensive programme of events and projects in the community that are designed to bring the community together in a shared activity, provide an opportunity for people to express themselves creatively and leave with a sense of pride and achievement at having gone beyond their technical, creative or perceived limits.

Workshops and Events in Public Places

One of the main activities of Arts Express is to take visual arts materials into public spaces and invite anyone and everyone to have a go. For example, in 2002, we took stone, wood and carving tools into parks and town squares on 44 days, encouaging the public to try their hand at carving. We run similar workshops for mosaics, printing, life drawing, painting, casting and ceramics - and a full Art Gym with four or five workshops at one time.

Workshops and Projects in Centres

Arts Express has experience of working in schools, community centres, health institutions, museums and other centres. These include special needs schools, homless centres and mental health groups.

Public Art Commissions
From our public workshops we have developed larger projects that create permanent artworks. Our aim is to engage the community at all stages. Most commissions are a three-part process of design with the community, consultations on designs, and production by the community. Past projects include mosaics and sculptural benches.

Outcomes

Bringing People Together
In our wokshops people find themsleves working next to all sorts of people they would never usually interact with and quite naturally leave with a sense of community.

People Expressing Themselves
For many people our workshops are a rare opportunity to express themselves creatively. We believe passionately there are things that can be said in art that cannot be said in words.
